  1. No one knows for sure the provenance of the name "Peru", but it's possible that it comes from either "Piru" (reed) or "Viru" (a valley in northern Peru).

As for a nickname for Peru, the most popular are "The Land of the Incas"....or "The Land of Legends and Riches".  Or how about "The Land of the Potato"? (I just made that one up)

  2. 1.- The name: It's not certain exactly what word got deformed to become Peru. What is true is that Peru has no meaning.

Just like the english asked the australian people How do you call that animal? And the indians replied KAN GOO ROO! which means "I don't understand You!". The same way Peru was mistaken eather by VIRU (a culture in the northen coast) or BIRU (a land in Panama near the Gulf of San Miguel).

2.- Nickname: One of them was attribuited to an Italian naturalist, geographer and writer, who traveled many parts of Peru in the 19th century named ANTONIO RAIMONDI (1824-1890) But this nickname was of popular usage before Raimondi, he just made it more popular.

"Peru is a Beggar sitting on a Golden Bench"

  3. I wasn´t aware that it had a nickname.

  4. The Land of the Incas, becase Incas lived here.
