  1. Waivers. Same way LA traded for Maddux after the deadline, same way the Mets traded for Ayala, and the Red Sox traded for Paul Byrd.

  2. There are two trading deadlines.

July 31 - Teams can deal directly with other teams about all player transactions prior to July 31st.  For example, "I'll give you so-and-so for such-and-such."

August 31 - Before deals can be made, players must pass through what is referred to as "waivers."  To briefly quote Wikipedia... "Any player under contract may be placed on waivers at any time. If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player's league gets preference. If no team in the player's league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference. In the first month of the season, preference is determined using the previous year's standings."  During the month of August, if a player is claimed by another team off the waiver wire the original team has three options:  let the player go, pull him back off of the waivers and retain him, or work out a trade with the team that claimed him.

Trades may be made following the August 31 trading deadline as well, however any player acquired after August 31st is not eligible for the acquiring team's post-season roster.

That explains the actual mechanics of how the trade was made.  I can offer you no reason whatsoever why Adam Dunn made it through waivers without being claimed by a team other than the D-backs.

  3. He was placed on waivers and the D-Backs picked him up.

  4. yes, it was a waiver wire deal.  the reds put dunn on waivers, to try and clear up some salary for next season.  arizona claimed him, and had 2 days to negotiate w/ cincinatti on a trade.  not sure what they gave up, but it's usually not much in these waiver deals.

  5. He was placed on waivers before the trade deadline and the Diamondbacks claimed him.

  6. He was placed on waivers, and the Diamondbacks put in a waiver claim for him and worked out a deal for prospects with Cincinnati. With waivers, the player in question is offered to each team, starting with the team with the worst record. If a team puts in a claim for him, they have to work out a deal. If they can't work out a deal, the team trying to deal the player has to withdraw the player from waivers.
