  1. I am very glad you asked this question because I recently picked up the book described in this link

    http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Lifes-Orig...

I paid 50 cents for it at the library.  Check out the used book prices.

Basically the book, which in many places is beyond any training I have had, refutes most theories put forth prior to the investigations described in this book.  Charles Darwin envisioned a warm little pond in which elements and minerals might be given a jump start to organic compounds. This is often felt to be started by lightning but other possibilities are considered, like volcanic activity, or sunlight.   This then would start the ball of life rolling and presto, look at all the critters.

He termed this warm little pond a pre-biotic soup.  The authors and investigators have attempted to reproduce this in the lab but there was always evidence against it happening this way.

So, I guess, as of the writing of the book 1984 the answer was felt to be unknown.

Perhaps some Internet searches could shed more light.  Good luck to u.

  2. This we are told.

Around four Billion years ago there was a lump of spinning rock. It took around a billion of those years forming the beginnings of bacteria and algae  to leave their traces in ancient strata. After a further great stretch of time slipped past,   we are also informed that worms crawled out of a biological swamp. Everything was going along hunky dory, when all of a sudden after three and a half billion years which would be about 540 million years ago, Life all of a sudden erupted in an unexplained event which we now know as the Cambrian explosion. In a biological frenzy the earth became covered with creatures in the sea, and on  the land. The earth changed from being like a field of poppies to Piccadilly Circus in the rush hour. During the explosion all known plants and animals suddenly appeared, yet not a trace of their development can be found it the earlier fossil record.. We have to just accept that they arrived fully formed fully evolved and fully functioning, teeth sharpened and scales glistening. No one knows to this day who or what let them out. Or why. And given such a push, life has never looked back.
