How did the founder of burton snow borad come up with the idea?

He didn't come up with the idea.  The original idea came from the Snurfer that I don't know who came up with.  (Snow/Surf=Snurf).  Sims and Winterstick were both brands that were out before Burton.  I'm not sure who had the patent first, but Mr. Carpenter went and bought the patent for the snowboard.  The idea didn't totally take off at first, but eventually it caught on and became big.

Well, Jake Burton was a Snurfer, which is like a snow scooter. He then modified his Snurfer, adding straps on the board forr bindings and removing the handles. They would not let him compete in Snurfer competions, but soon, there was a contest for modified Snurfers.

As a kid, Jake had always wanted to surf, but never owned a surfboard. He did however have a Snurfer (a 70's sidestance, single ski sledding toy, that Jake transformed into the modern day snowboard) and he knew it was cool even though nobody else did.
