  1. I think it was when it started raining all the time.

  2. Perhaps.

I think that it became popular because people are gullible. Seriously, I heard a green party member on the radio the other day actually suggest that people spend thousands of dollars insulating their homes to save energy.

Not everyone is made of money, apparently he forgot that.

  3. It's because the word got out about peak oil.

At this point we either go green or perish like the dinosaurs.

In practical and considerably oversimplified terms, this means that if 2005 was the year of global Peak Oil, worldwide oil production in the year 2030 will be the same as it was in 1980. However, the world’s population in 2030 will be both much larger (approximately twice) and much more industrialized (oil-dependent) than it was in 1980. Consequently, worldwide demand for oil will outpace worldwide production of oil by a significant margin. As a result, the price will skyrocket, oil dependant economies will crumble, and resource wars will explode

On top of that, the polar ice at the north pole is set to break up this summer or next for the first time in history. Huge chunks of ice are breaking up in Antartica as well. One of them was seven times the size of Manhattan
