How did the heart come to represent love/affection?

Why the heart? Couldn't it be any other organ?

  2. Primitive people used to believe the heart was responsible for the functions we now know are conducted by the brain.  They considered all thoughts to be from the heart.  

    It made a lot of sense because when you feel fear, anger, love, etc., there are physical responses that you feel from your heart.  For example, when you're nervous, your heartbeat accelerates.  

    Some feelings were considered to be sourced in the stomach, such as hunger.

    I think those pre-historic people were pretty smart.  I think thoughts come from my head, but it's only because I've been told that's where they come from.  Thoughts come from somewhere within you, but there is no physical feeling in the head associated with, "I love that person," or, "I'm hungry."
