  1. Most money during the Renaissance was in the form of coins.  It wasn't until 1660 that the first banknotes were issued in Europe by Stockhom's Banco.  They stopped issuing them 4 years later because they didn't have enough in coin to redeem the notes.  In 1694, the Bank of England issued the first permanently circulating banknotes.  It really wasn't until the 18th century that paper currency really came into being.
