  1. The Mongols created the largest conquest in all history.  They dominated, in a mere 25 years, all the lands between Siberia and India, and from  Korea to Hungary.  And westward to India, Iran, Russia, Turkey, Syria, and eastern Europe.  In Asia, in the 13th century, they unified China for the first time since the 9th century.  It remained so.  They also unified Mongolia, their homeland, with China, as it remains today.  The Roman Pope sent emissaries to request that Europe not be attacked further and urged they  convert to Christianity and received a reply that he send a delegation of kings to pay homage to the Khan!  Mongol emissaries were sent to a Turkic Sultan of a vast holdings under the guise of opening a trade partnership and were executed:  this resulted in his land left with "No eye remaining open  to weep for the dead".  Europe was terrified.  As were the Muslim lands to the south.  The Mongols were known as butchers.  With 20,000 mounted horsemen they road some 8,000 miles, defeating every army they met, including defeating a Russian army of 80,000, and surrounded the Caspian Sea.  Kiev was reduced to ashes.  Poland and Hungary were ravaged clear up to what is now Germany.  Bagdad was laid waste and Damascus surrendered.  In China, the Sung dynesty was overthrown and the new capital became what is today known as Beijing.  They imploded, however, because they derived their spiritual sustenance from one charismatic leader or another.  As each one died, they would regroup "back home" to decide upon a successor, leaving behind an inadequate amount of warriors to "hold down the fort".  This caused a series of retractions as the empire shrunk back to whence it had come, in the far East.  In 1368, the Chinese threw their Mongol masters out, forcing them back to Mongolia. Thus, amazingly, in about 150 years, this largest of all land grabs was history.
