  1. They were hired to play a band on the TV show and in doing so, they decided they wanted more control of the music that was released.  Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were already professional musicians anyway.  They fought for more musical control and got it.  By the time they released the album "Headquarters" (1967 or 1968), they had full control.
