They had substinence living until they discovered the cash crop Tobacco.  Many settlers in Jamestown in fact died from starvation, disease, etc.

Jamestown eventually had all the trades, farmer, pastor, doctor, carpenter, wainwright,mason,fisherman, hunter,sailor, tradesmen, soldier,washerwomen, cook, blacksmith. Many people were versed in multiple skills.At least half the original settlers were considered gentlemen, I'm not sure that's a way to make a living or not
