Most Native Americans held a deep belief in the supernatural. This included a respect for nature and the earth. This belief ranged from what Europeans mistakenly called the "Happy Hunting Grounds" to beliefs that all animals, plants and rocks held spirits.

Both were used to instruct and explain.
