  1. Well, that depends entirely on who you say the successor to Julius Caesar was. According to his will, his heir was his great-nephew, Octavian. However, his political heir was Marc Antony.

Marc Antony turned the popular opinion against Caesar's assassins through a clever blend of rhetoric and showmanship. He forced Caesar's killers to flee for their lives and then spent several years persecuting them. During this time, Octavian grew powerful and forced an alliance between them both along with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus.  Together, the three men gathered an army and crushed the armies of Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, the two most responsible for Julius Caesar's murder.

Despite troubles with Parthians and a rebellion in Sicily, Lepidus, Octavian, and Antony ruled together as a fairly successful triumvirate.

The triumvirate later fell apart, and Marc Antony doomed himself by "going native" in Egypt (an unforgivable sin in Ancient Rome). The years following Julius Caesar's death were marked by civil strife, civil war, and invasions by barbarian tribes.

None of those problems can be laid solely at the feet of Caesar's successors, however. The real culprits were the men who killed Caesar. They underestimated the problems that would occur by their killing the head of state; they believed--incorrectly--that everyone else would immediately understand why they had committed the murder, immediately sympathize, and that the transition of power would be swift and orderly. The same mistake would be made by the killers of Robert F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Indira Gandhi, James Garfield, William McKinley, Abraham Lincoln, Franz Ferdinand, and Mohandas Gandhi.
