i understand how heads came to be, but what about tails

  1. Very Simple, you understand why they use heads (the head of a president).  The tail is the opposite of a head.  They were probably thinking about snakes. (one end head - other end tails)  


  2. Prob. b/c heads and tails are opposite...like a head on a dog is on the opposite side of the dog than the tail is.  And since one side of a coin has a president's head on it, and the other side is opposite, they used the opposite word.
