They used to be a little lax on regulations, and the cockpit door wasn't locked prior to 9/11.

Many laws were changed *after* 9/11. They used to open pretty regularly.

Just a hypothetical scenario, let's say a passenger has a gun and says "Open the door, or we start shooting passengers." I'll be lots of people would open that door, hedging their bets that the plane will still land somewhere, and not crash. Now, however, not as many people would take that risk, knowing that people are not wanting to hijack planes to just land somewhere else.

Back in the years before the hijacks that resulted in the worst day this century they were not strict as they are now. And in my opinion I think they need to be stricter because U can't ignore things anymore like they do at these airports since 9-11  Sure they were strict at first and everyone was raising cain because they had to wait in these long lines for luggage and body checks. Well SO WHAT!!!  I would ather be safe than sorry. And besides noone needs to be in the cockpit but the pilots and the flight attendent that takes care of them

That's a new regulation. Prior to 9/11, a lot of airliner cockpits just had a curtain and hardly any had locking doors.
