  1. Farmland cannot be used to grow crops ever year, because the nutrients in the soil need to get replenished over time. Prior to the three fields system, farmers would leave half their lands fallow while they grew on the other half, then switch the next year.

    However, the three fields system used one third for a very nutrient intensive crop, one third for one that used up less nutrients (usually crops to fed to livestock), and left a third fallow. Each year it rotated. This meant that 2/3s of the farmland could be used instead of just 1/2, allowing more food to be produced, thus allowing for larger populations, and major part of the agricultural revolution of the middle ages.
