About 30 men travelled in a longboat which could travel by both oars and sails depending on the condition of the wind.  The longboats had a shallow hull and could travel upstream to small villages both inland and on the coastline.  They were able to launch surprise attacks with blistering ferocity and than dissapear with their loot as quickly as they had come.
