First, you should have posted this question in the Physics section of Y/A.  Second, don't you mean "Ernest Rutherford's" gold foil experiment?  Lastly, the world didn't react to it at all - only other physicists studying the nature of the atom around that time (1909 - 1910) and we are talking about a very small group of scientists here.
