  1. I know citation died of old age, what about Secretariat and spectacular bid. Anyway my best guess on all those horses is that they died from complications of old age. and this is why I say this; these triple crown winners are very special horses, with a high value in the breeding shed, they are doting on as one would treat the queen herself, they are guarded and watched by a complete staff, which no wants the distinction of being at fault or falling asleep on the job.

although spectacular bid was murdered for insurance money, which could make an interesting book report in itself.

there is a book that my father owned called "history of horse racing in America" I believe that is the proper name of the book and all those horses histories are in it, except for Secretariat and the bid. the book was published before their time

there is also another great book called Classic Lines, between these 2 books there is a wealth of information.

Also call the horse park in Lexington, KY. most all of those horses where bred or foaled there.

you can call or go on the web site of horse racing hall of fame, all those horses histories are there.

  4. I'm sorry I just could not let this go. Answerer #2 has his facts all mixed up!

Spectacular Bid was NOT murdered for $, he lived a long life. I visited him several times in his retirement, he was one of my all time horse heroes! His trainer once said this of him: "the greatest horse ever to look through a bridle" and missed winning the Triple Crown when he finished 3rd in the Belmont behind Coastal. Legend has it that the poor finish in the Belmont was attributed to an injury sustained the night before the race. Delp claimed a safety pin became lodged in one of his hooves and caused the horse to run a dull race. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectacular...

The horse that was supposedly murdered for money was ALYDAR!!!! This took place at Calumet Farms, at one time one of the most famous farms in Kentucky. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi...   and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alydar

The then owner was convicted of OTHER crimes, but not the murder of Alydar.

The Kentucky Horse Park is NOT a farm for breeding. It is a showplace for ALL breeds of horses. Several famous champs were retired there... John Henry, Cigar and now Kona Gold is there.http://www.kyhorsepark.com/
