Question:

How did they get my unlisted number? Is this legal?

I recently moved and registered my number on the do not call list. (Its been on there about 2 months) I also have an unlisted number. About a week ago, I got a call from the Fraternal Order of Police for my State. They addressed me by name, and through the course of the conversation, I also discovered that they had my address. Now, I know the police aren't making these calls, they're actually telemarketers, right? So forget about the DNC registry, but how did they get my unlisted number? I'm assuming from my phone company, to which I pay a HEFTY price to remain unlisted so that I DON'T get these calls. I have caller ID, I just picked up without checking it this time, I don't want to have to keep screening my calls because my phone company has loose lips!

  1. easy to get and not illegal

    Hefty price...what $2 a month  lol

  2. They get the info from someone you're doing business with that you gave the information to, that then sells the "mailing/calling lists" for so much per hundred people.  Non profits do it, catalog companies do it, so think who you gave your new contact information to and that's probably where it came from.

  3. aha.. I hear ya.. listen.. I just finished my job of telemarketing.. all you have to say when they call is ;

    "take me off your calling list please".. if they call again.. ask to speak to the manager. it is harassment to keep calling after you have informed them to stop calling.. screening your calls wont help, we just call you back the next day.. and continuously. until you actually answer.

    you might be happy to hear.. I'm no longer a telemarketer.. :)

  4. "Now, I know the police aren't making these calls, they're actually telemarketers, right?"

    No, its the Fraternal Order of Pigs.

  5. Regardless of all those measures, non-profit organizations have different guidelines and are authorized to call homes even if registered on the No Call List.  The one that you mentioned above is especially bad - I remember the guy giving me a hard time for saying no... he said that 'even a bum can afford a couple of bucks'.  I can't remember exactly what I said in return, but they haven't called since.
