I lease a horse at a stable that has outdoor and indoor stalls and he normally stayed in the indoor stalls but his stall had to be used for an injured horse so he stayed in the outdoor stall. When i came the next morning his nose was bleeding and he had scratches (looked sorta like claw marks) on his neck and when the vet came she confirmed that his skull was fractured ini 3 places. How could this have happened any ideas?

  1. wow that is horrible!!

i would say that it is a possibility that he was rolling in his stall and go stuck and just started thrashing around. Do you have a contract with the barn you are keeping him at?! If not you should press charges or atleast have them pay for the vet bills.

    i hope this helps :)

  2. Oh My! :( Sounds sorta like he was attacked by something....I would really keep an eye on that bc alot of animals wont attack unless they have rabbies...I would be very worried of having my horse out at night at this stable.

Sounds as if maybe if the animal was on the horse's neck and was hurting him, your horse may have flipped himself over in trying to get the animal off of him, in turn hitting his head and fracturing his skull.

Im so sorry :( an I Wish I could be of more help, I hope everything works out ok for you!!!

  3. wild animals! wholly c**p. fractured skull. thats rlly serious!!!

  4. There is a place near us that had issues with panthers attacking their horses. It could cause the injuries like you're describing. It seems to me that your horse got into a fight with another animal, very likely a large cat if you have those in your area. Cougars, panthers, maybe even something smaller like a bobcat?  I would try to keep him inside at night if you can. And call local wildlife officials and file a report so they can check out the area. Good luck, and I hope your horse is okay.

  5. Your horse might have got attacked by a wild animal. The stables that you keep it at should have had some sort of security against wild animals!
