How did this specific method of praying salat come to be?

Salat is so specific. You say certain supplications while sitting or standing a certain way. How did this come to be? Is it prescribed in the Quran? Allah undoubtedly asks for all muslims to pray, but is this what he means? Salat is so specific. Is there any significance in the movements? I mean in sajda and ruku, any significance to this position, and how it came to be..

Basically I'm asking how such a specific manner came to be, when there seems to be no mention of it in the Quran..? (Prayin is of course mentioned, but now HOW TO pray)

  1. Assalamu Alaikum,

Angel Jibreel taught Prophet Mohammad SAW  and Prophet taught all his companions. This is how the Sunnah of Prophet has reached to us and will continue being observed for ever.

Jesus Christ and Moses did pray salat same way. Christians and Jews slowly abondoned the ways of their Prophets and today they have have abondoned Rukooh and Sajood all together from their

salats. Every Church has its own ways of worshipping God. I don't know much about Jews except that I hear  they also don not make Rukooh and Sujood.

May Allah always keep us on the right path of Islam that our Prophet Mohammad taught us.

  2. The Quran teaches us in many suras that Submission (in Arabic "Islam") is the religion of Abraham (2:135, 3:95, 4:125, 6:161 and 22:78). Muhammad was a follower of Abraham, as we learn from 16:123. All religious practices in Submission (Islam) were given to us through Abraham; they include:

    (1)   the five daily Contact Prayers (Salat),

    (2)   the obligatory charity (Zakat),

    (3)   the fasting during Ramadan, and

    (4)   the Hajj Pilgrimage to Mecca.

Specifically, we learn from the Quran (21:73) that the Contact Prayers (Salat) and the obligatory charity (Zakat) were given to Abraham.

Numerous verses throughout the Quran inform us that the Contact Prayers were in existence, intact, and practiced before the advent of Muhammad (see for example 8:35 & 9:54).

All positions of the Contact Prayers are found in the Quran, including the standing position (3:39, 39:9), the bowing and prostration positions (Rukoo' and Sajood) (2:43, 3:43, 9:112, 22:26,77).  !i
