  1. When more and more states began appearing in the west the South believed that the new states should be slave states. The North (well most of the people) believed they should be free states and many believed the states should choose for themselves. This was just one of the conflicts that arose between the North and the South and eventually (as you already know) war broke out (the civil war) and the North won, thus putting an end to slavery.
