How did you chose your avatar, and what does it say about you?

What’s in an avatar?

A reflection of who we are,

Or who we wanna be?

Our own image or the one we wanna see?

An attempt to show our personality

Without the fear of harsh reality?

Or just silly little pictures

Without any strictures?

I mean: who’s gonna judge or hold a grudge

Towards a cute little kitty

When they post a poetic ditty

That no one really cares for

And never wants to read more?

(E.g.) my mom has gray hair and is old and mean,

Yet her avatar is sweet and looks eighteen.

I crack a laugh whenever she IM’s me.

But as far as my avatar goes, I am me

Well, a self-portrait I painted

To immortalize and make me sainted.

What’s in your avatar?

  1. My avatar is the cover of the 2006 Kansas City Blues and Jazz Festival Program. I was Editor and a contributing writer and photog. This was Bo Diddley's last performance in KC. I finally met the man who invented Rock & Roll. Sadly, that was probably the last KC Blues & Jazz Fest, for awhile anyway.

  2. Moose is a nick name.  I am a big man and hard to move if I do not want to be moved.  Love your poem and this party is great.  Where can a guy get a beer?

  3. I like the green hat and also,

very much so, I like to see ol' Bukowski's face when I log on each day.

  4. i like the part about your mums avatar.Whether it's true or not, it's still funny.

As for mine,I let my sister create my avatar.I think it's pretty accurate.I am that pale with big eyes.I think the mouth is spot on.

  5. This just reflects my silly side of me.  That's all. Got some great answers here.  Nice poem too

  6. My avatar is just a picture of me. It is what it is and nothing more.

  7. A fun, thought provoking read. I love my butterfly avatar, as I took the photo last summer, but I like to switch things up a little too...I tried at least a dozen times to put a photo of myself in and all I get is a white box with an X in it. Thanks to your poem I might try again today!

(Lovely self portrait, by the way!)

PS. The butterfly tells a lot about me, you just hafta think about it...

  8. People believed I was a teenager with my cartoon avatar. Older poets in emails said, "how can you be an editor at such a young age? You must be very intelligent?" Or, "young lady, you cannot possibly understand." Etc. That is why I decided to post a real photo, not to immortalize myself, but to make it clear to the P's of M and would-be poets that I am a mature adult.

  9. Thought-provoking piece, all the more so because the image we present to the world in our other lives -- the ones we live "offline" -- is similarly a representation bearing only a passing resemblance to who we really are.  We do such things to be accepted, to fit in, and sometimes because we legitimately do not know who we are.  All I can say is that my avatar bears no resemblance to me, but my "nickname" is an accurate reflection of my nature, though that nature has caused me enough grief that I sometimes wish I could change it!

  10. Fun read with interesting thoughts about the personal avatar.  As to looking like a Saint...sainthood awaits! lol

As to my avatar, an evolving picture that started as a part of another sign and then in boredom I redrew on screen and played with colors.  Perhaps the all seeing...neon eye!  Subliminal ain't it!

  11. It's a picture of me...I want people to see who I am, instead of an avatar.

  12. Nice poem.

I chose my avatar because all you hear about

on Y!A is Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, and

other soulless bubblegum pop- type music.  Sid vicious

was the antithesis of these bands.

  13. What you see is what  you get...I'm not fond of Avatars

I want to be as real as I am able in a virtual world.

  14. I thought chicks digged squirrels.

Plus there is a bar near my former house with this name, Squirrel cage.  I thought it was cool and when I saw this picture, I decided on the Squirrel cage name.

Nice poem, thanks for sharing it

  15. A friend found this photo for me and since I am always helping people out, going to the rescue, etc, she said it fit.  Hence, SuperBob was born.

    Nice question, good poem too

  16. yeah, who'd want to pick on a sweet little kitty cat  ; )  love your poem, very clever!  this cat chose me, i think.

  17. Very nice question poem.  I like it.

I am very simple in that I like cigars.

  18. My picture is of me and my sniper rifle.  It makes me look like a chain gang warden, so I cropped it to leave out the rifle.  Makes me feel like Johnny Cash, oldern dirt and dressed in black.

  19. I am hydro. I was brought here in hydro and if all works out, I will leave here in hydro. Hydro surrounds me. Compounds me. And sad to say it drowns me. This force of nature gave me all I have and am. Seems only right that said force took it all away. But still, I am hydro. It is where I belong and it is where I want to be. I shall accept all that being of hydro brings with it.

When you all quit laughing, just think for a moment of my words past and realize I am exactly as my bio claims. I am here being me. And I am hydro.

Thanks for asking my man...Great to know that yours is a self portrait!!

  20. Hey, "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

I love John Belushi, he was one of the all time great comedians of our day, or any day.

Loved the poem, very nice.  Hey, Happy Hour is here, did he bring any extra brewski's?

    EDIT:

Whoa, caught between 2 pretty ladies, does life get any better then this?

  21. <grunting noises>

I like beer and happy hour.

    <more grunting noises>

    Nice poem

  22. Hehe, this poem made me laugh...so true, though. On the internet we can be whoever we want to be, and sometimes we can be the truer us. My avatar is just a pic of me. I thought the cartoon avatars made me look so young, they all look 16! So I uploaded a photo of me and voila! You get to see my smiling face whenever you go onto my profile!

  23. I feel my answer would be best expressed through an episode of The Buk Show:

        Buk- Let's see it.

        DB- Dirty old man!

        Buk- I meant the dingelbury!

        DB- Dirtier old man!

Buk- What inspired you to name yourself after a t**d-encrusted ball

that dangles from the asses of filthy people?

DB- It's my statement on the societal misgivings that are perpetrated

through ill-conceived notions about the perceptions of the Man/Woman

        relationship.

Buk- I don't know how to respond to that.

DB- Just show me what's under the dirty green hat.

        Buk- *lifts hat from head*

DB- Is that a baby squirrel??

        Buk- h**l if I know.

DB- Put the hat back on, that thing looks pissed.

Buk- Why the skull avatar? What does it represent?

DB- The eradication of humans is a pithy theory, yet it may be in full

swing in terms of decency and good humor. Therefore, our souls may be

skeletonized by our inadequate responses to well-intentioned people.

Buk- Don't talk to me like that. I might ask you to leave.

DB- I have to be going anyway. Be sure to feed the squirrel.

        Buk- Stay lucid. Goodnight
