The longest lived animal in history is the 405-year old clam found in the waters of Northern Iceland.

How did you feel that such a long-lived clam was killed?

  1. -The clam did not have 'a full life'-

    Haha She's true.

I wonder if I was the clam, It would be so grateful to the one who release me from the 405 years of lonely, boring, dark, cold, prehistoric, and never enjoying s*x - life. How about yours?

  2. they killed it when they opened it, so maybe they didn't know it was that old until they opened it

  3. hmmmm i wonder what a 405 yr old clam would taste like

  4. That's ridiculous. They should just let things live, you know? No matter how old it was in the first place, why did they even open it..

  5. In order to help the clam population and the ecosystem as a whole, things need to be learned which can only be learned by sacrificing a few individuals.  It's part of the job.  People who say 'they shouldn't have killed it, no matter if they knew it was old or not' would have us not learn what we need to know, and potentially have all the clams die off due to our lack of understanding in how to deal with them and their ecosystem.  One clam is killed and dissected, and thanks to the things we learn from that, a thousand more will live.  They're not sadists who enjoy killing things, and you can bet that any one of them would rather see the animal living peacefully in its natural habitat than dead (and that goes for scientists studying any organism).  It's about ignoring the emotional response and doing what you gotta do.

If it makes you feel better, if they found one that's 405 years old, it means there are probably 50 more out there that are 450+.

  7. I find that disgusting!

    For example this bit:

"Its death is an unfortunate aspect of this work, but we hope to derive lots of information from it,"

That's just sick. They don't care at all about the animal or it's age, just about their research.

In the name of science, people think they can do anything and that nothing is wrong.

At the same time, how many animals are killed that could have lived for a much longer time? I eat meat, and also shellfish, so I'm part of the same chain.

Then again, an atttude like that, just because of science kill anything you want no matter it's age, I don't get that at all.
