How did you get your child to leave your heat vents alone...

I have 1 1/2 year old twins (boys) that I had to put into toddler beds because they were climbing out of there cribs. We took everything out of there room so they couldn't climb or play with anything while they are not supervised. The only thing in there room right now is there beds and the heat vent. They take it off the floor, they throw there pacifiers down it. We tried to tape it down but have burber carpet so the tape does not stick and they pulled it off and put that down the vent. We tried putting the bed leg on it but then the bed is to close to the window and they were pulling there blinds down. (I know I am going to be in TROUBLE when they are older)

Anyways...any suggestions????

  1. Sounds like you might need to get some LONG screws and have it screwed to the floor so they can't lift it .

  2. Life at your house is crazy and hilarious isn't it!  I bet you have some great stories!  I hope you are keeping a baby book or journal so you can remember this stuff someday when it will make you laugh really hard.  What little characters!

  3. Oh my son did this too. It isn't just yours.

To this day I still at times vacuum them out because it seems everything falls into them. Annoying isn't it?

With my son most of the time NO worked, but we'd still find crayons and stuff in it. But it wasn't a huge problem as yours sounds like. (Don't feel bad they are normal kids. lol)

Is it possible to move another piece of furniture over it? Could you move their bed and move a dresser or heavy toybox?

I feel that when a child is old enough to disobey they are old enough to learn and be corrected, but kids will get out of their beds and have fun while mommy thinks they are sleeping. lol (My oldest drew on her wall on day and had a lot of fun. She was about 2.)

I wonder if there is anyway for you to cover it until they are old enough to learn to stay away from it when you are not there. We bought a magnet strip to cover it at like Home Depo, but that wouldn't work for you. So I wonder if it is would be possible for you to measure the vent that can be removed and get a piece of wood or something sturdy to fit in there but can be removed later.

Do you have a Lowes or Home Depo near by? Maybe you can ask there and see what they say?

    Hope this helps.

  4. Ihave a little suggestion that just might work. Buy a window alarm. It is a small plastic box about as big as a pack of gum, and when it is pulled apart an alarm sounds. You can buy them at almost any home improvement store.

Find a way to put it inside of the vent so that it will pull apart when the vent cover comes off. It is very loud, and it will scare them quite a bit. They will leave the vent alone after one of two times of it happening.

Make sre they do not see you put the alarm in though, so they do not expect it.

I use these alarms to keep my little boys out of the refrigerator and medicine cabinet also, and they work really well.

    Good luck!
