How did you get your child(ren) off of pacifiers?

I cut a little slit in the tip of it, a day later I cut a little piece out of it, a couple of days later I cut a little more off of it and kept doing that until it was all my 2 year old daughter could do to hold onto it with her teeth.

SHE ended up tossing it out.

ok this is going to sound stupid but it works. tell the child the pacifier fairy needs them for other babies and have the child collect them all and put them in a bag and the fairy will leave her a present  for them. take them away that night and leave her a doll or dollar or whatever.

I know its the wrong time of year but my son asked for a certain present for christmas, so Santa took the dummies and left the present. We had a couple of nights of h**l and then it was all forgotten.

I don't understand the big rush people have of getting their kids off pacifiers.  If they are 18 months to 4yo and only use it at nap and bed time, then I say let them keep using it until they are old enough to reason with.

In our case, we basically bribed our 4yo with a gift if he would get rid of the pacifier himself.  He agreed, and so that there was no turning back, we had HIM cut the padifiers and toss them in the trash.  He never had a problem after that.

In the mean time, using the pacifier seemed to keep him from becoming a thumb sucker.  What's the point of ditching the pacifier if they are going to walk around with hands in there mouth as a substitute.  Now I know not every child does this, but I've seen enough to want to avoid it at all cost (grew up with a baby sister that sucked her thumb til she was in the 1st grade).  Letting my children contiune to use pacifiers has kept all of them from becoming thumb suckers so far.

I told my daughter that Santa needed it for the baby reindeer's because rudolph, donner, etc were out delivering Christmas presents for all the children and they needed comfort!!
