Question:

How did you introduce solids?

Dr said to start with 1 tsp a day of rice cereal for a week then barley and oatmeal. Since then she's had veggies (squash, peas, carrots & green beans) & just started to try fruit (bananas). For veggies and fruit, we started with 1 tsp on 1st day, 2 tsp 2nd day, 1-2 tablespoons 3rd day & then started something new.

Right now she'll have cereal for breakfast then nurse, then a new fruit or veggie for lunch then nurse & then just breastmilk for the rest of the day. My confusion lies with how to "mix & match" foods: should i be giving her a mix of the "established" foods for breakfast/lunch/dinner???

Has anyone found helpful info on this? The eating plans i've found seems for babies who have "taste tested" foods already. Hope this makes sense!

Oh yeah, are you supposed to nurse first then have solids? Ive been doing it the other way. Thanks!

  1. oh yes mix and match. it helps give them a variety. as far as introducing solids, try getting a grinder. then you can pretty much control the consistency of the food she is getting. beef stew is an excellent place to start. (it has a bit of everything in it) Dirty moore is good if you dont like homemade.

but honestly try going to the 3rd stage foods that have chunks.

    Give her variety.

    good luck. have fun

  2. follow food with the beverage to wash it down I have 6 i breastfed great isnt it ok you should only introduce 1 food at a time so at her biggest eating time introduce her to i.e pears along with the cereal and then add an evening feeding as well for lunch a verity is fine use her normal but smaller amount then her new fruit with it and so on

  3. Ok always nurse first and then offer solids. Here is a good way to introduce new foods and combine ones that have already been tasted:

Day one: apple, breast, breast, squash, breast

Day two: apple, breast, breast, carrots, breast

Day three: apple, breast, breast, potato, breast

Day four: pear, breast, breast, potato, breast

Day five: pear, breast, breast, swede, breast

Day six: apple and pear, breast, breast, swede, breast

Day seven: apple and pear, breast, breast, squash with potato and carrot, breast

Only introduce one food per day and once a few foods have been tasted try mixing them. At first try not to mix both morning and afternoon solids but after one day you can mix both. If you decide to try something else new, just mix it with a little rice cereal and the day after you could mix it. I hope this helps.

(PS you would also offer the breast before each meal, I just didn't want to keep typing it! Lol)

  4. I mix and match food for my baby. We are starting finger foods at the moment. Nursing, it all depends on what my baby wants to do. Sometimes I do it before, sometimes I do it after. There are not set ways.

    Babycenter.com has some good info.
