  1. Well - as soon as I got engaged I started looking at wedding dresses!  I spent a few hours one day trying on a couple of dresses - the one that really stood out to me was a huge church-like halter neck dress with cathedral train and lots of intricate beading with a huge ball gown skirt - it was very fancy (and heavy) and just like something out of a cinderella movie!  It looked something like this with a much longer train...

Well - we made plans for a full day of dress shopping a few weeks later with me, my mum and dad and my fiance's mum.  We tried on so many dresses!  The one I'd tried on before was no longer in the shop though.  It had gone.  We were so tired by the end of the day but had all narrowed it down to a few dresses...

This was a cheapy - at half price it was only a few hundred dollars - it was the first dress I tried and I loved it when I put it on!  http://www.princessbride.com.au/bridal.p...

This is not the exact dress but similar to it - my ideal kind of wedding dress - the type I had always thought I would wear - and it looked stunning on me!  http://www.tjformal.com/Products/171/754...

This looked gorgeous on - just a beautiful style... but I wasn't sure about it because it looked more casual than what I had 'imagined' before trying on the dresses http://www.wendymakin.com/popup.asp?cati...

The shop attendant came along with this dress and I remember thinking - wow it is weird - but it can't hurt to try it on!  It looked amazing on me.  It was so different than anything else I'd tried on but we all just kept looking at it... http://www.wendymakin.com/popup.asp?cati...

Anyway, so I had another gap and we organised another day to try on my top few dresses again and see what one I really wanted.  It came down to 2 styles.  I went home and talked to the parents and we eventually decided on one after a lot of deliberation.  I just wasn't sure if I should go the safe option with a dress style that I had always dreamt of... a dress that was just stunning and I knew would be me - or a dress that was so unique and different and would only suit a handful of girls and would make such a statement... I mean if you can't make a statement at your wedding, when can you?  Both dresses looked so d**n good - it was such a hard decision!  Well - eventually - this is the one I chose...

And I don't regret it!  I just wish I could wear it again!  And I am sure that later down the track I will buy a dress like the standard halter one above and I will be able to look lovely in it too!

  2. Well, I started dress shopping as soon as I got back from our vacation at Walt Disney World (June 2007, when we got engaged). We went to David's Bridal and I had selected my bridesmaids dresses and was about 95% certain I had found my dress as well, just wanted to try on a few more dresses to make sure because I felt like I hadn't tried enough on. When we went back for my appointment, my consultant hadn't gotten to work yet, so another lady started helping us. After fussing at me for wanting to try on more dresses (because apparently every bride is supposed to select a gown after just 3 dresses or something), she asked me what size I wore. I was losing weight and was a size 16 at the time. She looked me over and said "Surely you mean a 16*W*." When I insisted that I wore a regular 16 (remember, I had already been there trying on dresses - I knew what size I had on before), she said "Believe me, honey, you need those extra 4 inches."

That day crushed me - I felt so fat and that I'd never find a dress that I could be beautiful in. My Mom, moh, and sisters were the ones that encouraged me to get back out there and look at other dresses, telling me how wrong that lady had been. My moh and I drove all over Georgia looking at dresses - it was an adventure because I am horrible with directions and she's from Germany, so needless to say we got hopelessly lost quite often, lol. Before long, I got back into the fun of dress shopping and we would drive to shops during the day and plot our next days adventures in the evening.

I'm very traditional - I always knew I wanted the classic white poofy dress. I'm also very style and detail oriented - I didn't want a plain white dress, I wanted one with gorgeous beading and design to it. And I'm also one that likes having something that's just a little different than the usual, without rocking the boat too much. I fell in love with my dress because it was everything I wanted and even more beautiful than I could have imagined - it's a very traditional white gown and silhouette, but has gorgeous beading. My favorite part about it is the green ribbon that goes down the back (I got it in white and clover) - I think it's beautiful. It's just like me - the blending of traditional and contemporary. My moh said she knew I had found "the one" when I got so excited when we found it in a size 16 at a store. We had seen it at another shop, but it was in a size 8 and 26 - neither of which gave a good idea of how it would look on me. I put that dress on as soon as we found it, and then didn't want to take it off or try on any others, lol. I love it so much and I can't wait for him to see it. :)

  3. Go to David's Bridal; they are wonderful! I looked online and had a dress picked out, but then I brought my mom and my Nana into the store and they picked out this stunning princess dress for me to try on. It was the second dress I tried on and Nana cried...twice. : ) I knew it was the one because when I saw it on me, I could see myself walking down the aisle and marrying my fiance in it. It's so beauiful and not at all what I thought I wanted...the moral of the story is...trust your elders and keep an open mind! ;)

  4. I was married on 06.28.08 and went to several shop about a year in advance looking at dresses. Beteen lack of help, rudeness or hated the dresses I went to other shops. Fnally took a rad trip to a bridal shop an hour from my house. Walk in and was greeted warmly by the girl who owned the shop. Told her what I was looking for and I picked out dresses. I liked them all (especially one in particular) but she told me that she had a dress she picked out for me that is probably what I wanted. I tried it on AN LOVED IT!!!!!! OMG!!! It was gorgeous and I forever owe her and that shop for helping me out!!!!

I have actual pics on my myspace page if you want to see them! Email me and let me know!

  6. You should make an appointment at a bridal salon.  Then try on several different style dresses until you decide which style looks best on your body type.  Once you have the style picked out, try dresses with different designs (ie. lace, beading, pickups, etc.).  You will know when you find "the one".  My dress was a couture bubble dress, full length with a train.  Across the bust it had rouching (not sure if I am spelling it right) and then it had some beading and lace.  Hard to explain, you'd have to see it.

  7. I got married on 6/28/08.  After he proposed to me,  I went dress shopping.  I knew I wanted something with color but wasn't sure what at that point.  I had looking online and found a few.  Then I went and tried them on.  The one that I had picked out, didn't look good on me.  I found this other one that I fell in love with.  I put  it on and it made me feel like a princess.  I wanted my dress trimmed in Navy, but the particular one came in the velvet blue and i decided I didn't want that.  We already had picked out navy.  And I had orginally wanted to have david's apple as the color, so the dress I had one was trimmed in the apple.  So I got the color I liked and so did my husband.  The look on his face when I walked down the aisle was priceless.

  8. I knew that I wanted a dress with sleeves because I do not like my arms at all. I went to a bridal shop on my lunch hour with two co-workers to try on one specific dress. I hated the dress that I went there to try on.

The lady at the shop said she had one more dress she wanted me to try on. I told her I couldn't because I didn't want to make anyone late for work. My co-workers insisted that I try it on. I put it on and I knew that it was the one. It was a gown made by Pronovias called Italico.

Here is a picture of my dress:

  9. I tried on a lot of dress and was ready to give up, went with my mother to one more place and saw the dress and loved it and it fit perfectly.  Here it is http://www.jasminebridal.com/html/en/web...

  10. i wore my mom's dress. my grandmother, my mom and i altered it so that it was a completely different dress. we changed the neckline, added a lace overlay, added some pink accents, beading, and sparkles. the shape ended up changing in the process too. so like i said it was a totally different dress in the end but it was still my mom's. my parents and grandparents were really excited that i decided to wear it and it ended up complimenting everything i planned for the day. it also became a very special experience that i shared with my mom and grandma. dress shopping lasts a day or two, dress making lasts months. it wasn't the dress that i would have bought had i gone dress shopping but it ended up being so much better than anything i would of bought.

  11. No pics to share, sorry.

My story is downright anticlimactic. I looked through magazines and websites for months, and decided I wanted an off-white, off the shoulder gown with absolutely no embellishments. I had an elaborate antique pearl necklace I had restrung specifically for my wedding and didn’t want a bunch of crud on my dress competing with it.

I went a dozen or more stores. Tried on more than 100 dresses and not once did I find anything remotely close to what I had in mind. In fact, not a single dress I tried on ever felt like The One. I finally got so tried of looking and found a dress with a single detail I really liked – pearl beaded crisscross straps, so I gave up searching and bought it. It’s not that I hated it, but I was kind of indifferent about it.  The whole dress had beading all over it so I had to scratch my jewelry plans.

It grew on me as I looked at pictures after the fact but I am not one of those OMG, I love my dress people.

  12. I was looking for bridesmaid dresses (which I was making my mom try on, good fun!) and the shop owner asked me when I was going to look for MY dress. I had no intentions of looking that day but my mom talked me into it. The 5th dress, the one the owner picked out, she brings to me and says, "This is YOUR gown." And I'm like, sure thing sparky... and I try the dress on. And the moment I look in the mirror I see my mom behind me with tears in her eyes. And that's THE dress, no questions asked. I said, "Just do it!" and ordered it that day. It was actually a great feeling to have that done and over with lol.

My dress is champagne (which I NEVER thought I'd wear) satin, A-line. It has a fully hand-beaded basque waist bodice and full 3" wide beaded banding at the bottom with a cathedral train. It has gorgeous beaded straps and a low back. I am in love with it ( =

    Good luck!
