  1. I don't personally have a child because I'm to young. But I had to teach it to the kindergarden kids at my school.

First you have to teach him the fundamentals all the pieces and their moves and names. Teach him and make each part of the learning process fun and engaging.

Make him his favorite meal and eat it together while teaching it to him. Second I found that having some kind of reward or something that he likes givin to him after he learns how to play such as giving him his favorite toy or letting him watch his favorite show on t.v. Every time he wins. If he looses give him positive reinforcement. Say he did a good job and that he'll win next time. Make chess something that he wants to do and not something he has to do just because you want him to. Give him a game that teaches him how to play so that it feels to him as being a video game when its really a learning device. Well thats all i have

  2. First, let him observe someone playing the game. Then, show him how every individual piece work. Inform him what is the main goal of the game- to capture the king. You may also show him the different techniques- fork, discovered attack, pin, etc. But experience is still the best teacher.

  3. there is a special chess game that has the moves of each piece on its base. but if you don't want to buy a new set, then play against someone else, and if your child watches and asks questions, answer them

  4. The way I am teaching my nephew who is 4 is by letting just constantly going over how the pieces move. I will let him move more than one piece on his turn as long as he makes a legal move. Also we really do not play actual games, just more of hey buddy can the horse move here, can I do this with the bisop (this guy) etc. It seems to be working.

  5. just play it yourself.  if you play it, he/she will probably want to know what you are doing, then you teach them the way each piece moves, then you play a game together.
