The doctor is thinking that is why my son is staying sick alot with coughing and so on.....I have to take him to a ear, nose & throat doctor though to see for sure but if your kid had them removed how old were they? How did they handle it mentally and physically?? (My son is 7)

THanks

  1. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed at the same time, in December 1997 (I was 6). I was scared when I first found out that I had to have surgery, but after the first few minutes of knowing I was fine. When I got to the hospital the morning of the surgery they gave me a tour and showed me around, and they gave me a bag of things from the hospital (a pair of kid's scrubs, some "doctor toys", and a get well card from all the staff). I thought it was really cool, and then they told me I could eat all the ice cream I wanted (there's no better way to win over the heart of a 6 year old, haha). Then I went into the room for anesthesia, and my dad was there so I wasn't scared. They just gave me a mask with the anesthesia in it to breathe in, and told me to count to 5. I was out at 2. Then I woke up in the recovery room and I was fine. My throat hurt for a few days, but I was okay. My surgery was done on Dec. 19, and I was back at school for our Christmas party on the 21st (my throat still hurt a bit) and I fully recovered by the 26th, when we went to Maui for a week.

Your son will be fine. You'll be more worried than he is. If you've got any questions, feel free to email me via my profile, I'll be more than happy to answer them for you.

  2. Hi, i had my tonsils taken out 4 years ago and in the past 4 years i have had 2-3 sore throats and they only lasted a day or two, it only took me 2 weeks to recover, it was a bit painful but i was heavily drugged with codene but it is totally worth it! i had strep for months straight and now i dont if he needs to than get them out it pays off big time in the long run.

  3. I had mine out at 11 aprox 20 years ago and the doctor said they were golf ball size and said he couldn't believe I could breathe!  It took about 2 weeks to be totally recovered although I sounded funny talking for a week or so after the operation.  I always had the taste of blood in my mouth the first week and didn't want to eat anything and popsicles that my mom bought I didn't ever want to touch again after that cause it was all I could eat for a week.

  4. Mine was 4 when he had his out and he was fine - a 7 yr old might be more upset as they can understand what is going on re the anaesthetic - but if you make it a game - exciting it will be ok. Get a book - Topsy and Tim go to hospital is a good one - explains everything. Make sure you go to the open morning on the ward (assuming that he has never been in before), so that he is not worried, and get plenty of dvds for afterwards, as they are not that well and are not permitted to go out for one week, and my Son wasnt back at nursery for 3 weeks. There again, mine had tonsels, adanoids out and grommits in, so it may be different.

In any case, take OLD pj's - they throw up afterwards and invest in plenty of calpol

    good luck!

  5. we got the same experience, tonsils were removed when she was 9 years old, it did'nt effect her at all mentally either physically, thanks God! its simple, MORAL SUPPORT is the answer.

i was wondering my daugter was so tough that day, that she insisted in going to school the following day,and its a good sign.

  6. couple day recover and they loved the attention and ice cream.  No problems
