How different is Irish culture from American culture?

I'm an American with dreams of moving to Ireland, but don't get any ideas, I'm not the stereotypical greedy and work obsessed American. I'm a loyal vegeterian that yearns for the simpler things in life and just wants to enjoy life to the fullest. I've been enchanted by what i've heard about the Irish culture and many of my distant ancestors derived from Ireland, so it has long been my dream to move to Ireland. Do you believe that it would be too much of a struggle for me to move to Ireland or do you think that I "dumb" american would be accepted/welcomed in Ireland. Thanks for your help!

  1. Think of it like this.........how well are the mexicans accepted in this country????????.............hmmmm, points to ponder.........

  2. Ireland has changed alot in the past decade. Alcohol is the new God. Teens and twenties (female as well as male) go out with the intention of getting drunk and that means vomiting either in the pub or on the street. Late night street-fighting is common. Cannabis, ecstacy and cocaine are to be found easily in cities and even small towns. s*x is as common as blowing your nose and young girls dress like tarts. Young males hunt in packs and have no respect for either themselves or girls.

Forget the Ireland of The Quiet Man. It's history.

I have lived in Ireland all my life.

  3. Hi,

Riverclarin describes something that happens. The Pub culture has always been an important part of the Irshi Life with Alcohol and lots of it. As a foreigner living here for 8 years now I can see a change, small at the moment, but some people after travelling would now rather have a dinner home with friend. It is not the majority.

The irish culture is very strong and overall resists very well to the invasion of english and US influences (TV, movies, music, sports). In a word both do co exist.

Life is quiet, stress is not at the same level as some other places in here.

On thing that annoys me though is the cost of living and the ridiculous prices of housing, either buying or renting.

As an american you'll need a work permit I guess.

  4. I'm Irish and I think if its your dream to move to Ireland then whats stopping you?

Avoid Dublin though as house prices are very expensive and the cost of living in general. Traffic is also chaotic! But if you want hussle and bussle then its a good spot.

I love Galway its a gem of a place!

At the moment our friends the Polish community have integrated into Irish life quite well and I'm sure we can fit you in too!!

Us Irish work hard but play harder haha!!

If you need anymore advise let me know. I'll fill you in more.

    Hope this helps some bit.

  5. irish people are so friendly.  i've never been there but where i used to work they'd bring a group of them over for school (study abroad). anyway, they are just the nicest people and they really take you in.  but they'll drink you under the table, as been my experience!  lol.  they're great chefs.  and they say tele instead of tv.  hehehe.. i liked that.  it seemed like they were very taken aback by our relationships mostly.  you date someone a long time before you get married and things are more traditional it seems there.

just some food for thought.  i'm sure you'll get answers from real irish people who can tell you more.  but i never felt like they stereotyped me at all, they were very loving.  : )
