I am trying to cut alcohol from my life completely,as it is like a poison to me.For a while now I have mostly drunk in moderation,in general.Im never been an alcoholic as I dont drink every day, sometimes I go weeks or a month even without a drink so I know I can limit it now.It is difficult though when going for a night out and your on your own in a crowded place, first instinct is to get beer.

Thinking of drinksense or AA perhaps?

  1. I do drink in moderation, it's the whole going to pubs thing I never got on well with.

Perhaps it's the way I was brought up and where I was brought up.

Where I come from, men that go to bars and "nights out" are just one step away from being a total failure.

But perhaps I am just extreme. I often go for scubadiving sessions at nights, lol.

  2. I sometime struggle what helps me is I take my car then when people get really drunk I normally go home and come pick them up it is hard but if try talking to your friends they can help you, by not continually asking you if you want a beer/drink

  3. I get a soft drink instead.  But I am not an alcoholic.  If you really have difficulty controlling your drinking, it is foolish to go to a pub.  There is a whole world of activities that does not involve alcohol:  football, walks, cycling, movies, billiards, shopping, carnivals, picnics, church activities, etc.  Going to the pub is born of habit and laziness.

  4. I'm not a big drinker at all and usually end up designated driver. It's not a big deal to go to a pub and not drink alcohol. Get a soft drink instead. There are more people sober out there than you think. It's so much better for your health too. Good for you.

  5. Get a Soft drink and get into other activies. Join a Gym. That helps.. Keep up the good Work..

  6. Obviously the point of going to a bar is to drink or meet someone.  Yeah it's going to be hard not to drink cause you have all that pressure around you.  It's ok to have a beer once in a while.

  7. A lot of people go into bars and pubs, and don't drink. Sometimes, bars and pubs have really good food, and sometimes they'll have a D.J. or do a karaoke night.

People who don't drink are the designated drivers and usually only drink water, club soda or diet soda. Drinking and driving are not a good mix.

If the call of the alcohol is too much for you, then bars and pubs are definitely not the places to be hanging out. You promise yourself "I'll not drink anything but a diet soda, or maybe a club soda with a splash of cranberry juice. I swear it." The next thing you know, you're face down on the floor hearing the bartender shout out "Last call for alcohol! You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here, folks!"

If you think you have a drinking problem, then you probably do. Ask yourself if you have to have a drink in your hand in order to have a good time. Are you more fun when drunk, than sober. Do you "need" a drink to get through the morning. Do you "need" a drink to survive the afternoon. Do you "need" a drink to cope with stresses at home, or to conquer boredom.

If the answer to any of those questions is, yes, then see your doctor and discuss your options. He/she will tell you if a program like AA is a good one for you, or if there is another one they prefer over AA. To drink or not to drink starts out as personal thing, then becomes an addiction.

Good luck, no matter what you do.
