How difficult is a college intro to french language class?

The class is "intro to french 1" and i have no past experience in french.

I took a little spanish in high school, but remember very little and since a foreign language is required for my major I wanted to try something different since I didn't like spanish. Is going into a college course like this with no experience a mistake? I'm very committed to learning/practicing as I really want to learn and do study abroad in europe.

  1. I tried to learn french, and did poorly.  The language doesn't taste good, or feel good in my mouth.  However, I'm a natural in Italian. It's a happy, expressive, emotional and musical sound. I like the "american" language as well. It includes many words from other language bases.

  2. It's actually pretty easy.  They start with the basics like the alphabet and numbers and simple phrases like I'm hungry or how are you...

    You will do fine!

  3. I would imagine that intro to french 1 would be a beginners french class and therefore your lack of experience will be expected and the teachers will know how to deal with this. They would not let you onto the course if you needed a certain level of French as a pre-requisite so if that's what you want to do, enroll and have fun learning french!

  4. Since it's most likely a 100-level class then it should be easy.  They should go slow and assume that you have had no prior exposure to the language.  It'll be fun.  I'm a Spanish minor and the two classes I've had so far were pretty easy.

You'll have to practice outside of class and use what you learn as much as possible to make it stick.  A foreign language is forgotten easily if you don't practice it.
