I'm preparing to join the Royal marines.I have a swimming test to pass.Breast stroke. The thing is i haven't been swimming for yonks, and i was never a strong swimmer.I am physically fit however....so, as long as you're fit and can swim,is breast stroke easy to master?...i have about two months.

also, can anyone recommend any good swimming baths in Birmingham to learn....i don't much fancy being laughed at by the school kids!

  1. If you don't have to be really good at it, it shouldn't be too hard to get the basics of breaststroke down. To excel, though, it takes a while to get the timing down.

  2. It's not that hard, it's all about the co-ordination. And don't go too deep or you will find the recovery hard and wear yourself out quickly! It all depends on who is teaching you and their method..

  3. It's really hard at first, and don't forget to breathe!

It shouldn't take you too long to pick up what to do, in 2 months, you should master it! I'd say practise every 2 days for an hour or so.

    Good luck!

  5. First of of all congratulations on enlisting.  While the Royal Marines should teach you everything you need to know to pass the swim test, preparing on your own won't be too hard.  Check out http://www.goswim.tv for a lot of great videos and drills that will help you learn the stroke.

    General tips for breaststroke:

    1) Start and end in a line.  Gliding is your friend, as you finish the kick glide until you start to slow down and then start the next stroke.

    2) Small pulls are better than big ones.  Your hands and elbows should always stay in front of your shoulders. I tell my little ones think about having a big tub of ice cream in front of you - you want to scoop around the edges and put it in your mouth and then go for more.

    3) While your face is in the water, your eyes should be looking down.  Bringing your head in line will help your hips rise, allowing you to 'swim downhill' as opposed to 'uphill'.

    Good luck.

  6. of all the swimming strokes, this is the easiest, just go & do it, dont worry about the kids, if you go to the marines kids will be the least of you troubles
