  1. Diagnostic tests including MRI/CT etc are only carried out if the Consultant you have been referred to by your GP feels it is necessary. So if the Dr feels you need further tests to diagnose then you will be referred for a scan. Privately, depends on what scan, anywhere from £800-£2000. These scans are expensive, so are only really done on the NHS if needed.

  2. You will only be referred for an MRI scan if your doctor feels it is essential.  You don't way what sort of MRI you would like - to give you an example, a brain scan would cost around £800 privately.

  3. I was quoted 1100 quid for my MRI scan privately (on a cruciate ligament problem).

I could afford it, but to me it was a matter of principle - I pay high taxes and NI so I waited on the NHS.

I waited 29 months, but for a more inportant problem they would probably squeeze you in.

  4. if the consultant thinks it necessary it willbe done, however ther e is usually a very long waiting list for one. i found a link for private scans http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/private-h...

  5. It all depends whether or not you need one.  Your doctor usually would have to refer you to a specialist first and foremost as GPs dont routinely have direct access to request MRI's.  MRI requests need to be justified by a referring clinician and a radiologist, you cant request one yourself.  Waiting times have come down in recent years, expect to wait about 8-10 weeks for a routine scan, obviously less if it is more urgent but its all dependent on the individual hospital.  Private costs vary depending on the body area, and whether multiple areas are required, e.g. lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine usually count as 3 areas.  Also, it would depend whether the radiologist thinks a contrast agent is required for the scan.

If you do require a scan it would be a good idea to enquire at your local hospital about waiting times before you pay privately as the waiting times may not be as long as you expect.  Hope this helps.

  6. If clinically indicated you will get an MRI scan on the NHS. Waiting times vary and have reduced in the last year but in England most vary between 2 weeks and 2 months. For urgent indications it would be quicker.

A private scan for a single area would cost from £200 upwards plus about £75 if contrast injection needed. This has less to do with quality and more to do with profiteering by some providers. The NHS is paid about £160 for each reported scan so its possible to work out how much is profit if you are quoted £500 or even more. If you contact the link below they will put you in touch with high quality MRI centres who will do a private MRI scan at around £200
