  1. It is not hard at all.

Are you going wireless or wired?

Either way, it is an easy day.

I would stick with a Linksys product.  For wireless, go with a WRT160N.

  2. No worries, it's not hard at all.

If you're computer is connected to your modem directly, unplug it.

Take the ethernet cable you just removed and plug it into your router (the port you will want to plug it into will probably say something like "internet link" or "internet in").

Take another ethernet cable, plug one end into an empty ethernet port in the router, and the other end into your computer.

Take one more ethernet cable, and plug one end into an empty ethernet port in the router. This may need to be a long ethernet cable if you need to run it from the room where your modem is to the den. Plug the other end of this cable into the computer in the den.

If you want, you could purchase a wireless router, so that you only need to connect the modem to the router, and not physically connect the router to your computers. Your computers will have to have wireless cards in them to connect through a wireless router, however.

EDIT: Wireless routers are really about convenience. I have one simply because I don't like having wires running all around my home. You can see all of your network adapters, including wireless ones (they will have something like 802.11 or WLAN in the name) by going to Device Manager in Windows.

Right click on "My Computer" -> Properties -> Hardware tab ->Device Manager

Check under "Network Adapters".  If it says "ethernet" in the name, it is not a wireless adapter. If you cannot tell if an adapter on the list is wireless or not, you can probably figure it out relatively easily by typing the name into Google.

  3. not at all. it should come with a disk and it will show you step by step what to do.

  4. are the computer and the router both wireless able?

  5. It is not very difficult as long as your new computer has a NIC card.  Most routers come a CD that walks you through the steps.  After you run this disk.  You use your flash drive to configure the other computer using that setting from you old computer.  When you go to add a computer to my network the wizard will tell you to insert your flash drive in the old computer remove it and insert into all other devices that you wish to add to your network when you do this you should see your drive flash at least 3 times before you remove it or wait 30 seconds before you remove the drive.  This will add it to your network which would allow you to connect to the internet.

  6. no, my grandma has that
