My husband and I are in our sixties. We are in pretty good shape...used to regular excercize. Do you think we can trek from Cuzco to Machu Picchu? There seems to be a four day three night trek. Any opinions? Thank you.

  1. So long as you are in pretty good physical condition there is no real reason you wouldn't be able to complete the Inca Trail trek. It is hard work and tough on the knees due to lots of stone steps but the real problem is acclimatisation. You should aim to spend a minimum of four days (and preferably over a week) at over 3,000m to give yourself the best possible acclimatisation. During this time drink lots of fluid (but not alcohol!) and do short day walks if possible in order to get used to the altitude.

Asssuming you prepare properly you should certainly be able to complete the trail and you'll feel immense satisfaction on doing it!

  2. The walk is easy, if you've done hiking before. There is a nice path the whole way. Steep sections have the old inca steps cut into the mountain.

The hard part is the altitude. spend a few days in Cusco or Puno before you go.

  3. My wife lived in Peru for 15 years and made the trip once.  She was acclimated to living above 10,000 feet and she said it was a brutal trip.  If you aren't used to hiking at altitude, you can expect to have legs that feel like the weigh 300 pounds each.
