He is currently living with us and both parents are agreeable. How long of a process is this and how much should we expect it to cost?

  1. You should consult with a family lawyer first.

The adoption process could take a long time so you may want to consider just filing for legal custody of the child. If that parents are agreeable then once you have legal custody you could work on filing for adoption.

  2. If you get a family lawyer, it shouldn't cost that much considering all parties are in agreement, there will be just paperwork and signatures involved, no court.  A lot of lawyers will give you a free consultation and tell you what you can expect to pay.

    Good luck.

  3. I suggest you just go for legal guardianship instead.  Either way, talk to a lawyer.

  4. Not sure how much it would cost or how long it would take, but you are a very wonderful person for doing this. Congrats!
