Question:

How difficult would it be for me to learn to play guitar?

I'm 17. I know how to play piano but I'm not very good. I've pretty much stopped playing. The reason is that I'm depressed because of family problems and it's hard to keep an interest when all anybody wants to do is whine and complain. I plan to move out as soon as possible.

Besides that, I want to learn how to play guitar. I just wanted to know if it would be difficult. I can't really learn to play right now because my family is very uptight and any noise I make with an instrument makes them mad. It's probably also the reason why my sister doesn't play drums or piano.

I was also thinking of teaching myself, like I did with piano. I learned from a book so I have a little bit of musical knowledge. The reason why I want to teach myself is that I'm a very private person and I don't like to depend on others. My school has guitar class but I won't take it because I don't like learning in front of other people. This is something I just want to do alone. I don't want to be a rock star or anything, I just want to play.

  1. If you know how to play piano then you should be able to play guitar pretty well, Learning to play guitar by your self is a bad idea, There many things about guitars that are hard to understand so you'll need a private teacher.

  2. bro i've been playing guitar for a few years now and i taught myself.you knew how to play piano i didn't.i never knew how to play any instruments.and it's hard thefirst few weeks because your fingers will hurt so much.but bro it's so worth it.after the first 2-3 weeks your fingers will be fine and you'll be on your way to being a future rock star :)

    good luck man.

  3. It shouldn't be that difficult

  4. Honestly, playing the guitar is not that hard.. But the first two or three months are tough.  Your fingers hurt and it's hard to see much progress. But if you can get passed that it's an instrument that can bring you a life of joy...  There is a free ebook at http://www.guitarleader.com that can show you all the basics you need to start out.  It's really cool with diagrams and simple explanations of everything.  Learning your chords is one of the first things you should learn to do.  It is also the most challenging but like I said stick with it and you'll see that playing the guitar is as easy as it is fun....   Good Luck

  5. depends, do you have 2 hands?

  6. Its pretty challenging, but you should definately give it a go, my motto is that anythings worth doing if you can better yourself from it. Also, falling back on an instrument is a great way of dealing with stress, family or otherwise. And lastly, yes, because you have clearly put the time and effort in to teach yourself piano, i have no doubts that you would do the same with the guitar. Best of luck to you!

  7. Im not sure where you are, but in my local town the guitar shop has tutoring sessions 1 to 1. Just you and the teacher. So you could play but not annoy your family with the noise.

It shouldn't be difficult if you start on the easiest level and progress to more difficult stages gradually.

But if you don't want to do any of that, why not look around for learner-guitar forums, or just use yahoo answers?

    Hope this helps :)

  8. Since you play piano you have a headstart. If you know your theory and how to build chords then there are only a few obstacles to overcome:

    -Finger strength

    -Strumming

Everything else is just memorizing your chords, that is if your just going to strum, not play lead. I play piano and guitar, but I started on guitar first. I love to play.

  9. uhh it really depends because it didnt take me long at all but thats just me for others it could take longer it really just depends on who is teaching you how well you can comprehend the material you are trying to learn hope this helps

  10. It might not be that hard learning guitar some people are fast learners and some are slow learners it depend at what rate you can learn an instrument  at i would recommend a private tutor but since you are independent and like to learn in like a private way you can learn by book but first learn the cords and then work on learning songs like smoke on the water or like easy ones like old MacDonald when i first tried to learn guitar it was hard at first i quit after 2 weeks then i went back to it then practiced and now i am playing for my schools rock band so u never know man just put your mind to it and you can achieve it ok.
