I imagine that London is a little different to citizens of the UK than NYC is to Americans. When America was formed NYC was still a relatively small place in the world. So the population of NYC has been almost exclusively immigrant driven for the whole history of the country.

Ethnic diversity is much more widespread in America than it is in UK. About 1 out of 3 American Citizens is NOT of white European descent. Non-white residents of the UK are about 1 in 12. Smaller cities in the UK are a lot more ethnically uniform than in America.

In addition London is changing very rapidly. In 1991 only 18.5% if the population of London was foreign born. More than half of the "foreign born" population of UK lives in London whereas in the United States there are different demographic pockets all over the country.
