  1. The natural maturation of children has an effect on their strength and conditioning. They are not mini-adults and it is important to provide them with a safe training experience, yet it seems that adult and elite training principles are commonly applied directly to children.

    What are the strength gains that can be expected? Despite the limitations of many studies, it has been shown that children do get stronger from lifting weights. The question is WHY? In adults we know that gains in strength are the result of gains in muscle size. In children it remains unclear.

    Studies seem to suggest that as children age, the increases in muscle size accelerate. But increases in muscle size contribute very little to strength and power gains due to the limited influence of hormones such as testosterone, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor 1, and insulin in children. These, especially testosterone, do not take on major roles until puberty, so most gains must come from neurological mechanisms.

    Gains in strength between boys and girls, are similar up to early adolescence. Only when children become older teens do the differences in strength and size gains between girls and boys become significant.

    Increases in strength have been shown to increase performance in children, and proper strength training can decrease susceptibility to injury. The key is safety and proper training methods. If proper training methods are not used, the risk of injury increases dramatically.

    Initially, a child should attend about two training sessions per week for about four weeks in order to adapt and learn how to lift weights. The emphasis should be on PERFECT technique and basic exercises for only 1-2 sets of 12-15 repetitions maximum. Since children should not max out, they should also not reach failure with a 12-15 rep max weight and rest between training sessions should be at least 48 hours.
