  1. Genetic engineering has been used with various crops to

    increase yield

    reduce water need

increase insect resistance and fungus resistance

    improve nutritional value

    reduce fertilizer dependence

All of these have been very useful in various locations.

  2. Increased productivity.

  3. Crops are genetically modified to resist drought, resist pests, mature faster, and produce more crop per acre than their natural cousins, among other reasons. That means that the farmer loses less yield to insects, blights, drought, etc., has more production per acre, and may even have enough time to plant one additional crop each year after harvesting the usual ones.
