I speak only a little german - learned from my grandfather as a child and later in classes. However, I am not fluent and I'm afraid that I'll butcher German when I go there in November. How do Germans feel about Americans who speak bad German? Would they rather someone try to speak German poorly, or would they prefer that we speak English (after asking Tut mir leid! Ich spreche nur ein Bisschen Deutsch. Koennen wir Englisch sprechen?) I'm afraid that it might be exasperating for a German speaker to listen to me speak. And I'm a little shy...

  1. we love and we appreciate it .don't be shy

  2. I'm German and speak English fluently. However, I would very much appreciate if an American tried to speak German!! I would really recommend: go ahead and give it a try! If you get lost at some point you can still ask if the German speaks any English and if you could continue the conversation in English. But first try, and describe things. I think it's always better to at least try! Have a nice trip!!

  3. In my experience, they prefer you to try in German to start.  Then they will likely answer you in much better English, and you can then continue the conversation in English.

  4. i always told when i was in germany by an ex that the german people are more greatly appreciated when you attempted to speak their language. they may giggle but they will know that you are american. if you try to just speak english without the attempt of speakin german some will play the i dont understand game

  5. they are very nice about you speaking German and will even try to help you if possible.  good luck.
