  1. I like Srikant J's answer, but he left out one thing--get the poem published. Once it is published, it almost always copyrighted by the journal, and if it's not, then it will be out there already.

    But why would you want to copyright a poem? There's no need for it. It looks very amateurish to do so, as well. If you sent a copyrighted poem to a journal, they would send it right back.

    If you are worried about someone stealing your poem, then, well, you should be so lucky. Poetry thievery is very rare, and it is usually only done from previously published poems in books or journals.

    So again, there is no real need to ever copyright a poem.
