I've already tried the view>character encoding stuff. It's just not working. I need the Hirigana and Katakana to show up. Help is immensely appreciated.

  1. If you're using Windows OS, please follow this:

       1. Go to Start → Control Panel → Regional and Language Options → Add other languages.

       2. Note that, in the lower box, you need to check the check box next to the words "Install files for East Asian Languages".

       3. Hit the "Details" button in the upper box.

       4. Keep in mind that, on the right of the list of languages you have on your computer, you should now click "Add..."

       5. Choose your language and hit "OK".

       6. Select "Apply" (this is the window with the "Add..." button on it).

       7. Select "Apply" (this is the first window that you opened).

    Note that:

    * During the process, you may need to insert the XP CD so the relevant files can be copied across to your computer.

        * A typical Windows XP CD will have a folder on the disk called "i386". This entire folder can be copied to the hard drive and then can be referenced for anything needing the WinXP Disk. When a program asks you for the CD, select the path on the hard drive where you copied this folder to.

If that doesn't work, please try this:

    1. Go to the external link "Japanese Language Pack for Microsoft Office XP" provided below.

    2. Click 'Continue' for Validation of your Windows Office edition (if required)

    3. On the next screen, choose either option - Yes, validate; or, No, don't validate.

    4. Click continue.

    5. Download the language pack by clicking the 'Download' button

    6. Follow the install instructions provided

    7. Reboot your computer after completion of the installation
