Question:

How do I Handle the Smokers?!?

I have a problem with my housing situation. I am a non-smoker and a new resident in the building and I am located on the ground level of my building, by the front door. There are 1-2 residents in the building who smoke at least 1x/hour. They light their cigarette and hang around the front of the building or exit the building, light their cigarette and walk across the roadway. I am an outdoor person and LOVE to have my windows open. It's unpleasant to have a cloud of smoke come into my apartment and hang for awhile. Now that it's coming into the cooler months, I want to have my windows open more.

My problem. I don't know what to say to the offenders.. I don't like confrontation .... because for me to be really happy, they would have to smoke down the road a LONG ways. I don't want to tattletale to the management company.

I live in Maryland. I was trying to find out if we have a 25 feet from the building rule. I couldn't find anything. I am thinking the best thing would be to talk to the smokers.

  1. i have been smoking for over 30 years now with no plans to stop to please anyone, but i will say i do not smoke around my friends that do not as i do not want to bother them with the smoke, but if they come to me and i am smoking i pay them no mind as they came to my space not me going into theres, that's a problem you have but you might get some where with them if you asked for them to stay away from your windows it might work at worst they will just get mad at you but you will not know till you try

  2. move to a non smoking housing

  3. This is hard.  It might be better if you spoke to them but be prepared for them to get aggro.  Smokers have been given a bad time.  I cant imagine having to go outside for what is a legitimate habit only to be told it is not far enough, especially in the cold.
