For four years I have been a rower, but as I get closer to Post Secondary Education and rowing at a higher level I have been considering coxswain because I am short.

I am 5'4 and about 130 lbs...

How much should I lose and how should I do it?

  1. Try to get more information on dieting, weight loss articles, health and fitness articles, weight loss forum and BMI calculator at my profile and get the advise from them to lose weight fast and healthy.

  2. Ahhhhh rowing. I remember in high school a girl in my flyweight crew was a couple pounds overweight on race-day, so she had to do a sweat run in a parka in July. Then we got to scrape the sweat off of her skin with a credit card so she wouldn't re-absorb it. She was still over the weight limit, hence the next sweat run and scrape-fest. Ah... memories.

There's no magical way to lose weight - even for rowing. To become a college-worthy coxie, you'll need to lose 15-25 pounds - maybe more. Clearly that's not safe to do in a short amount of time, so the sooner you start the better. Since you're a rower, you probably already have a rigorous workout plan, so the only advice I can really give you is to adjust your diet. A plant-based diet is ideal for minimal calorie intake, yet it also very healthy. Just make sure you don't over do the weight loss thing. Be reasonable about the amount of weight you expect to lose and the time span you expect to lose it in.
