  1. Use steel wool to remove the clearcoat and scuff up the trim. You can then paint right over it.

  2. Prime it with an oil based primer to make sure you cover the stain (don't know if the stain was oil or water based). If you want to use latex paint, make sure you use a primer that will work with oil and latex paints. If you are using oil based primer or paint, use a black china bristle paint brush. For latex primer and paints, use a brush with synthetic bristles.

If the trim was stained and lacquered or coated with polyurethane, you will want to remove that first, or get a primer that says it will stick to that.

  3. Use a good quality primer and you can paint it any color you want.

  4. Thanks so much For your Help my mom put this question up for me.. I will definatly do the 3 steps like you suggested. I should take it all off then put back up after I paint walls Im assuming and Im in no rush so waiting is Fine...Have a great Nite

  5. It is, but I suggest starting out by removing as much of the gloss of it to begin with a stripper and then lightly sanding it by hand to rough it up. Then paint it first with a good primer paint before adding the coats of paint. Also allow time between coats to dry. I know it is hard to do that, but it will guarantee a longer lasting paint job if done the first time around. I tried to paint a fireplace mantle that was a glossy dark stained wood and I didn't put primer on it and the paint then started to peel within that week. EEK! I will never do that again. So remember- first get rid of that glossy stain- second rough it up- third primer- then last paint.

Have fun!! Take your time and don't rush thru it. A rushed job= more work later.
