It depends on the version of your My Yahoo Page (Beta / Classic).  Here is how to do it for both.

For My Yahoo Beta:

Click on the "Personalize this page" button and click on "Change color" link.

The background will alway be white unless you select a theme (textures, environments, passions or seasonal). I just checked and there are no themes which have a pink background. You can select the color pink, but that will only change the color of the frames and the background will be white.

For My Yahoo Classic:

Click on the "Change colors" link.

Note: You can edit any of the available themes for your own personal tastes. You should have no problem getting a pink background here.

this is not an answer, but I am having the same problem.  Did you switch to firefox?    I got back to classic yahoo, took awhile.  Still can't get my old background to work.
