Question:

How do I adjust bicycle handlebar height?

I've been looking everywhere online but can't find anything that has worked yet. There's a long hexagonal bolt at the top of the bike stem so I unscrewed that but the bars still won't budge. I've tried some WD-40 to lubricate it and it still won't move. What am I doing wrong? Am I unscrewing the wrong bolt? Help this is driving me crazy!

  1. ok if it is very long like 6 inches(or longer) then you are doing it proper but it is probably rusted in place. in this case you need to re thread the long hex bolt untill it is about quater to half a inch from the top or you stem. at this point you need to whack it with a hammer untill it comes loose because the quill down inside could be just jammed in there really tight.

after you do this put the front wheel between your legs and with a back and forth twisting motion pull it out.

If the hex bolt is like shorter like 1-2 inches and you can see a star nut like an inch from the top of the tube then you cannot adjust the height too much

  2. ok,seriously, on some bikes there is a two part system to raising and lowering your handlebars. there is the one bolt up top and then a thing down below that looks like a collar or something. loosen both bolts, and adjust properly. i don't know what your bike looks like. some are different. search the area of the top bolt you unscrewed. make sure there isn't another one below it somewhere. if there is it won't be far away.
